APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP)

About the Program...

This program is the APTA recognized Clinical Instructor Education & Credentialing Program.  The program was developed through a grant funded by the APTA under the direction of principal investigator Michael J. Emery, EdD, PT and co-investigators, Nancy Peatman, PT, EdD and Lynn Ford, MS, MEd, PT and the materials used by the New England Consortia of Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education, Inc. The course takes 15 hours to complete. The program addresses issues of planning and preparing for physical therapy students during their clinical education experiences and facilitating learning through questioning and effective feedback. Skills of evaluation are discussed, as well as the identification and management of students with exceptional situations. The program closes with a brief look at legal implications for clinical educators, including issues presented by ADA legislation.

About the Instructor

Dawn Blatt, MS, PT, DPT

​

Dr. Blatt received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1987 and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1988 from SUNY Buffalo. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management in 2001 and a Postprofessional Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2005 from Stony Brook University. She has worked in acute care and home care settings, with the majority of patient care provided as a senior therapist in a multidisciplinary chronic pain management program at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Dr. Blatt joined the Stony Brook University faculty in 1995 as a Director of Clinical Education and continues in this role today. Dr. Blatt has been an APTA Credentialed Trainer for the Clinical Instructor Education program since 2002, and also earned the APTA Advanced Clinical Instructor Training credential. She is a member of the NY/NJ Clinical Education Consortium.

 

Dr. Blatt teaches Ethics and Health Care in Physical Therapy in Year 3 of the curriculum, and Teaching, Consulting, and Communicating in Clinical Education in Year 1. She also serves as a faculty mentor in Case Studies I. Her primary responsibility involves coordination of the clinical education program, which includes serving as a connection between the PT program and the clinical community. She is also an adjunct professor in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program at Stony Brook University, teaching Professional Ethics in Health Care since 2001.
