SPEAKER BIO:

Dr. Neel P. Shah, MD, is a member of the Summit Health Orthopedic Surgery team. Dr. Shah is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon with specialized training in minimally invasive and microscopic spine surgery. He focuses on adult degenerative spine issues, motion preservation and outpatient spine surgery. He has specialty training and experience with artificial disc replacement surgery.

He is committed to using the latest, most proven techniques as well as the least invasive treatment options possible. Although qualified to perform the most complex spine surgeries, Dr. Shah’s philosophy may be summed up in three words: “Less is more.” His goal is to use the least-invasive treatment possible for the maximum benefit. Taking an individualized approach to his patients, Dr. Shah guides them to make the best decisions possible for their unique circumstances with the goal of relieving pain, restoring function and returning them to an optimum quality of life.

The doctor’s approach to patient care is to treat everyone like a member of his own family. “My goal is to guide patients toward making the best decision possible for their particular conditions and life situations, using the least-invasive treatment options as medically appropriate,” says Dr. Shah.

During a patient visit, Dr. Shah thinks it is important to spend time with every patient to ensure they are dealing with and helping to make the best decision regarding their next steps. His goal is to be a guide for the patient and help them along their care journey.

Dr. Shah finds the complexities of spine surgery most enjoyable. The four tenants he strives to achieve in spinal surgery include: decompression of nerves/spinal cord, stabilizing instability, correcting deformity, and motion preservation. There are many ways to achieve these four goals

Dr. Shah pursued a career in health care following in his mother’s footsteps, who is a respected primary care physician. Her influence, combined with Dr. Shah’s passion for fixing things and using his hands, made orthopedic surgery the perfect career choice. After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Shah received his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) in 2010 from the SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn. Here, he was the recipient of the Christopher Paldives, MD Award, recognizing the top medical student entering into orthopedic surgery. Dr. Shah completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. He then completed a highly coveted Spinal Surgery fellowship at the New England Baptist Hospital in a combined Orthopedics and Neurosurgical program.

When he is not practicing medicine, Dr. Shah finds it rewarding to spend time in central park with his wife and dog, Bodhi. He also enjoys skiing in the winter. He is thrilled to be back in New York City, Dr. Shah and his wife also love to explore all the amazing food, culture and entertainment of all the different NYC neighborhoods.
