Introduction to Hand Therapy, is a one day course that will provide therapists the basic knowledge and skills to perform a complete evaluation of objective findings of the wrist and hand.  It will allow attendees to recognize and understand common hand and wrist disorders and injuries.  This course will provide current evidence based treatment strategies to restore functional use of the affected extremity.

Who should attend? Physical Therapist, Physical Therapists Assistants, Athletic Trainers, Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapist Assistants. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this course, the practitioner will learn how to:

 

  • Identify the essential aspects of a hand evaluation and will obtain a basic knowledge regarding evaluating the hand client (including basic understanding of ROM, MMT, pinch, grip, sensation and special tests).

  • Describe the fundamentals of a thorough hand evaluation.

  • Identify the anatomy of the wrist, hand and forearm.

  • Be able to identify signs and symptoms for a variety of diagnoses related to the upper extremity including nerve compression, dequervain’s ganglion cysts, Common hand and wrist fractures, ligament injuries and tendon injuries.

  • Be able to select and prioritize treatment options and develop effective home programs to reduce the number of necessary therapy sessions.

  • Identify commonly seen hand diagnoses and treatment (RSI injuries, common wrist and hand fractures).

  • Discuss the etiology, pathology, and clinical treatment of common hand injuries/diseases.

  • Identify prefabricated and custom splints used to treat specific hand injuries/diagnosis

CEU INFORMATION

Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants:  

New York: Professional Seminars is recognized as an approved provider of Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant continuing education by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Physical Therapy. Full attendance at this Seminar qualifies for 9.3 contact hours in NY.  

New Jersey: Professional Seminars designates this program  for a maximum of 7.75 Contact hours in NJ. 

Athletic Trainers: Professional Seminars Ltd. is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education to Certified Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 7.75 Category A hours/CEUs.

8:20 - 8:50            Upper extremity anatomy review: Bones, Ligaments, Tendons and Nerves

8:50 – 9:50            Upper extremity evaluation:  Patient history interview, ROM, Strength, Sensation, Inflammation 

9:50 - 10:00          BREAK

10:00 – 10:30       Nerve compression injuries 

  • Carpal tunnel/ Cubital tunnel/ Radial tunnel

  • Splinting and rehabilitation strategies to decrease symptoms and restore functional use 

10:30 – 12:00       Ligament injuries

  • Collateral ligament injuries of the thumb/Inter-carpal ligament injuries /Volar plate injuries of the pip joint

  • Splinting and rehabilitation techniques to increase ROM, strength and functional use of the hand 

12:00 – 1:00         LUNCH

1:00 - 2:00            Common fractures of the hand

  • Distal radius fractures/Metacarpal fractures/Proximal Phalanx fractures 

  • Splinting and rehabilitation strategies to increase rom, strength and functional use following fracture 

2:00 - 3:00            Tendon laceration injuries

  • Flexor tendon injuries /Extensor tendon injuries 

  • Splinting and rehabilitation protocol review to restore functional use of hand 

3:00 – 3:15           BREAK

3:15 - 4:15            Common hand issues 

  • Dupuytrens contracture /Dequervains /Ganglion cysts of the wrist /Trigger Fingers

  • Treatment strategies to increase ROM, decrease inflammation and increase strength 

4:15 – 5:15           Arthritis of the hand 

  • Thumb CMC arthritis /Wrist arthritis

  • Discuss pre and post operative therapeutic strategies of the arthritic hand 

5:15 - 5:30            Questions and adjourn

Robert Wilutis, MS, OTR, CHT

Director of Hand and Occupational Therapy

Robert Wilutis is a NYS licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR) and a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), specializing in the treatment of traumatic injuries of the hand and upper extremity. He is an industry expert in custom splint fabrication of the upper extremity, including static progressive and dynamic mobilization bracing. He is a graduate of Providence College and Columbia University, where he earned a Master of Science degree from the school of Occupational and Physical Therapy. Robert completed his post graduate hand therapy clinical work at the Department of Hand Therapy at Mount Sinai /New York University Hospital. Robert has 20 years of private practice experience in the field of hand therapy. In 2016 Robert joined Professional PT as a partner and the Director of Occupational and Hand Therapy. Robert is a member of the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT).

Cancellations received at least five (5) business days before the event are refundable, less a $50.00 administrative charge per registrant. There will be no refund for cancellations received later. Please note: If you register and do not attend, you are still responsible for full payment.
