ABOUT THE EVENT:

We are excited to announce that Dr. Tania Woolridge, MD, MPH, of Hospital for Special Surgery will be presenting on Injury and Mental Health. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The participant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how stress, anxiety, and depression can impact physical performance and injury risk, using examples from recent research and clinical practice.

2. The participant should be able to identify and recognize common mental health issues in athletes and their potential warning signs, including how these issues may manifest in changes in physical health or injury patterns.

3. The participant should be able to describe the physiological and psychological mechanisms by which poor mental health contributes to increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries, such as altered biomechanics, delayed reaction times, and impaired recovery.

4. Identify the pros & cons of implementing mental health screening and intervention programs within sports organizations to reduce injury rates, including their potential to enhance athlete well-being versus the logistical and privacy challenges of integration.

SPEAKER BIO:

Dr. Tiana Woolridge, MD, MPH, is a sports medicine physician specializing in the nonsurgical treatment of acute, chronic, and overuse injuries. She is double board certified in pediatrics and primary care sports medicine and integrates a holistic, patient-centered approach to care, focusing on each patient's unique athletic experiences and life goals. She has expertise in concussion management as well as treating mental health issues in athletes.

Trained in advanced sports medicine therapies, including diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, Dr. Woolridge provides expert care for patients of all ages. Her goal is to facilitate a swift and safe return to the activities they love, using minimally invasive techniques and, when necessary, coordinating care with top-tier surgical colleagues.

A Los Angeles native and daughter of NBA star Orlando Woolridge, Dr. Woolridge excelled as a dual-sport athlete: a high school basketball state champion, a USA Volleyball Junior National Gold Medalist, and a two-time All-Ivy League NCAA Division I volleyball player at Princeton University. She earned her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and a masters in public health from Harvard University. She completed a residency in pediatrics at UCSF followed by a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at UCLA, during which she served as team physician for UCLA Women's Volleyball, Water Polo, and Tennis as well as the Los Angeles Lakers, Sparks, and Dodgers.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Woolridge is an active researcher and advocate for athlete mental health. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, presented nationally on mental health in athletics, and designed an award-winning, school-based mental health program in Los Angeles. She is an active member of the American Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
