LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:


1. Explain the role of lumbar motor control in recurrent low back pain and its placement within the Hierarchy of Rehabilitation.

2. Differentiate motor control impairments from mobility, pain, and radiating subgroups using Clinical Practice Guideline and Treatment-Based Classification frameworks.

3. Perform key assessments including observation, palpation, force steadiness testing, and application of Test into Dysfunction and Test out of Dysfunction to identify primary drivers of dysfunction.

4. Interpret findings through Hilton’s Law and the Clinical Decision Tree to guide treatment prioritization.

5. Design individualized progression plans that move patients from isolated activation to functional integration, strength, and dynamic control.

6. Integrate manual therapy, education, and exercise interventions in line with 2021 Low Back Pain Clinical Practice Guideline recommendations.

7. Apply clinical reasoning through case-based scenarios, ensuring safe and evidence-based advancement in rehabilitation.


CEU INFORMATION

New York Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants: Professional Seminars is recognized as an approved provider of Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant continuing education by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Physical Therapy. Full attendance at this Seminar qualifies for 7.8 contact hours in NY.

INSTRUCTOR BIO


Robert Shapiro DPT, COMT, NKT

Robert Shapiro graduated summa cum laude from Touro College with a Masters in Physical Therapy. Mr. Shapiro specializes in correcting muscle imbalances, postural alignment, and body mechanics to facilitate full recovery using muscle energy techniques, spinal mobilization/manipulation, prescriptive exercises, strain-counter-strain, myofascial release, Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT), the Hesch Method, and Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT). Mr. Shapiro was an adjunct professor at Touro College and New York Institute of Technology.
