This course is designed for the rehabilitation professional who is interested in learning more about the treatment of pectoralis major tears and the treating of patients following surgical repair.  The course will discuss the etiology, mechanism of injury and prevalence of this injury.  The functional anatomy of the pectoralis major tendon and how its structure is related to injury in various situations will be discussed.  This course will look at preventative measures in training and current concepts in rehabilitative techniques to employ status post surgery to ensure optimal outcomes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this course, the practitioner will learn how to:

 

  • Obtain a better understanding of the etiology of pectoralis major injuries.

  • Obtain a better understanding of the mechanism of injury and risk factors associated with pectoralis major injuries.

  • Understand relevant anatomy of the pectoralis major tendon and biomechanics that contribute to injury.

  • Learn current diagnostic and evaluative techniques specific to this injury. 

  • Explore the need to repair the pectoralis major tear vs conservative management.

  • Gain a better understanding of the surgical techniques employed to repair the pectoralis major tendon rupture.

  • Learn guiding principles and clinical pearls in the treatment and rehabilitation specific to this injury.

  • Gain a better understanding of surgical precautions and rehabilitation guidelines for this injury.

Timothy Stump MS, PT, CSCS, USA-W

 

Tim is a former partner with Professional Physical Therapy and a founding partner of the Professional Athletic Performance Center. Stump has more than 20 years of experience in the related fields of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Strength & Conditioning, and Performance Training of Athletes of all levels of competition. Stump’s experience includes the successful participation as a nationally ranked competitive strength athlete in the sports of Powerlifting and Weightlifting from 1990-2010. He continues to actively participate in these sports as a coach and mentor to many athletes. Stump has published several peer-reviewed original research articles and has presented his research at the APTA National Conference and at CSM. He was awarded the Jacob & Valeria Langeloth Foundation research grant for studies on ACL functional outcomes while employed at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Stump was the 2012 recipient of Columbia University’s Award for “Leadership in Clinical Education.”
