Event Recap: ACL Prevention and Treatment — From Poor Neuromuscular Control to Optimal Return to Sport | October 2015

October 17, 2015 | Uniondale, NY

Few researchers have shaped the field of ACL injury prevention more than Timothy E. Hewett, PhD, FACSM. In October 2015, Professional Seminars brought Dr. Hewett to Uniondale, NY for a one-day course that gave PTs, PTAs, ATCs, and CSCSs direct access to the science and clinical strategies behind his pioneering work. The course covered the full arc from risk identification to neuromuscular intervention — grounded in Dr. Hewett’s extensive body of research.

What the Course Covered

The Gender Gap in ACL Injury

Female athletes who participate in jumping and pivoting sports sustain ACL injuries at four to six times the rate of male athletes in the same sports. With the geometric growth in female athletic participation, that gap has produced a widening public health problem. Dr. Hewett reviewed the three leading theories for why this disparity exists — anatomic, hormonal, and neuromuscular gender differences — and presented the evidence behind each.

Identifying High-Risk Athletes

A major focus of the course was assessment: how to identify athletes at elevated risk for ACL injury before it happens. Dr. Hewett shared the latest data on biomechanical and neuromuscular risk markers, giving clinicians a practical framework for screening athletes and stratifying their risk with confidence.

Neuromuscular Training Principles for Prevention

The second half of the course focused on intervention: the neuromuscular training principles that have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing ACL injury rates in high-risk populations. Attendees left with a science-based framework for designing and implementing prevention programs — applicable to team sports settings and individual clinical practice alike.
