Event Recap: APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) | April 2016

In April 2016, Professional Seminars introduced the APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program to the Garden City area for the first time. The enthusiastic response highlighted the significant demand for quality clinical education training in the New York metro region. Dawn Blatt, MS, PT, DPT, conducted the complete 15-hour APTA-endorsed program over two days, providing PTs and PTAs with an evidence-based framework to enhance their effectiveness as student mentors.

What the Program Covered

The CCIP is an all-encompassing, APTA-approved pathway for PTs and PTAs to achieve the Clinical Instructor credential. The curriculum includes planning and preparing student clinical experiences, facilitating learning through questioning and feedback, evaluating student performance, managing students with exceptional circumstances, and understanding the legal and ethical aspects of clinical instruction under ADA legislation.

About the Instructor

Dawn Blatt, MS, PT, DPT

Dr. Blatt earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1987 and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1988 from SUNY Buffalo. She later obtained a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management in 2001 and a Post-professional Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2005 from Stony Brook University. Her experience includes work in acute care and home care settings, primarily as a senior therapist in a multidisciplinary chronic pain management program at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Dr. Blatt joined the Stony Brook University faculty in 1995 as a Director of Clinical Education and continues in this role today. Since 2002, she has been an APTA Credentialed Trainer for the Clinical Instructor Education program and has also achieved the APTA Advanced Clinical Instructor Training credential. She is a member of the NY/NJ Clinical Education Consortium.

Dr. Blatt teaches Ethics and Health Care in Physical Therapy in Year 3 of the curriculum and Teaching, Consulting, and Communicating in Clinical Education in Year 1. She also serves as a faculty mentor in Case Studies I. Her primary responsibility is coordinating the clinical education program, acting as a liaison between the PT program and the clinical community. Additionally, she is an adjunct professor in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program at Stony Brook University, where she has taught Professional Ethics in Health Care since 2001.
